Nantasket Beach Resort

Located in the historic and picturesque seaside town of Hull, sits the Nantasket Beach Resort. Hull is a long narrow peninsula projecting into Boston harbor, which the Plymouth Colony used to set up as a trading post with local Indians as early as 1621. One impressive structure in Hull that has played a significant role in the history of the region is the star-shaped Fort Independence that was erected in Hull in 1776 to defend Boston Harbor during the American Revolution. General Benjamin Lincoln oversaw the evacuation of Boston from the fort in 1778 and French Admiral d’Estaing used the fort to defend the French fleet from British attack when the French were forced to land for repairs. The blockade of Boston devastated the town’s economy of fishing, shipbuilding and lightering during the Revolution when these major businesses were interrupted

In 1825, Hull’s tourist industry as a major seaside resort began when the Sportsman Hotel was built on Nantasket Avenue. This was the town’s first hotel and still stands today. Hull grew as a summer destinations for a large number of city-dwellers who were ferried in by boat from Boston. By 1840, steamers were making three trips a day between Boston and Hull. Boardinghouses and elaborate hotels catered to visitors. However, Hull’s local economy continued to include fishing and farming in addition to this tourism.

Hull enjoyed an era of grand hotels and prestigious visitors to its magnificent beaches and busy boardwalk The number of visitors grew significantly in 1905 when Paragon Park was created to allow a safe family environment away from pick-pockets who had been wandering around the town. It was in 1985 that the unfortunate closing of Paragon Park occurred, thus ending an era of the resort town, up until the late 1990s when the plans to open a new hotel had begun. In 2001 the Clarion Nantasket Beach Hotel opened its doors, with hopes to rejuvenate the towns resort and beach destination and bring travelers back to the quaint seaside town. As of September 2010, the Clarion has been taken over and is known as the Nantasket Beach Resort.
